Lofty Ideas Require Practice, by Rev. Jill Brocklehurst-Booth

“Ignorance of the law excuses no one from its effects. If, then, certain specific ways of thought and belief have produced limitations, other beliefs will change them. We must learn to believe. The approach should be direct, and it should be specific.”
Holmes, Ernest. The Science of Mind

Here, in Campbell River, I am experiencing the insecurities of creating a spiritual community way out on the skinny branches. Every activity is new and what is required of my inner world is diligence. Often, running amuck are thoughts such as, “You suck, this sucks, we are going down.”

We all know what happens if I let these ideas overtake my desires, so I have become even more determined to hush the harsh judgment and practice the tools and techniques presented by many spiritual and thought leaders. I am trusting my inner voice that says, “This way.” It may not be what everyone else is doing but it is that still small voice that spiritual teachings implore us to regard.

So, I’m leaning into a practice with the Six Times Book as presented in the Diamond Cutter by Geshe Michael Roach. In New Thought Centres we talk about changing our thoughts to change our lives. Each minute imprint in this moment can make a huge difference in days to come… that is if it is sustained and not contradicted by opposing thoughts.

I often have high expectations of my desire for change and I regularly miss the target. The result is an integrity breach. I don’t mean to be in discord from my focus but the truth is, a lofty idea without a practice leads to futile results. This is not my intention of course. For example, I can choose to launch new and exciting programs at the Centre and then fret about finances, attendance, and how we are perceived in the world, or, I can add ‘Believe’ to my daily practice, reflecting on where I am missing and hitting the target, then give myself a ‘to do’ to deepen the discipline.

Getting honest with myself every two hours through-out the day, into the week, and the month is positioning myself for success. This active use of the Law always works, and I am so grateful to be aligning my desires inside and out. A world that works for everyone begins with me, and the air is so much fresher out here on these little twigs.

Blessings,

Jill Brocklehurst-Booth, Spiritual Director
Centre for Spiritual Living - Campbell River

Jill’s Science of Mind journey began in 1997 under Drs Kenn and Deborah Gordon in Kelowna, BC. After six years of intensive study, Jill opened the doors of the Centre in Campbell River, Vancouver Island, BC in 2003.

Ministry is not a straight line for Jill as the Centre is in constant movement, expansion and growth. She prides herself in their many achievements including the purchase of a building for their spiritual ‘home’ in 2015.  Great numbers in membership have not been a block to the work that a small group of people can achieve.

Their newest vision is a 100+ acre property to build their Camp/Retreat for learning, discovery, and as an environmental demonstration Centre. She holds the mystery of their future in the realm of Infinite possibilities and leaves the rest up to Life.
